The past couple of days have been the coldest yet this winter. Although we have gotten pretty lucky with the weather thus far out here in New York, it seems winter is finally here. The below freezing temperatures bring with them a longing for summer and all the activities associated with it.
Coney Island may not be what it once was, but the grimy beach area is still one of my favorite summer go-to places. The boardwalk, arcade games, Nathan's hot dogs, the needle covered sand, frigid ocean, the people and beautiful freaks all remind me of warmer days.
Structures started to pop up around the beach neighborhood around 1830. Attractions reached their heights during the first half of the 20th century and popularity had decreased by the end of World War II, largely due to neglect of the area. Here are some photos from Coney Island's heyday to help get you through this cold weather!
