Tattoo legend Mark Mahoney has perfectly blended the elite with the underworld in his shop, The Shamrock Social Club. He has tattooed some the biggest names in the entertainment industry as well as some of the hardest guys of the underworld. He is reputed throughout the tattoo industry and has been an influential player throughout his almost four decades of tattooing.
He began tattooing in the late seventies in Boston, where tattooing was an illegal art form. His interest in tattooing comes from a young age by hanging around young greasers outside tattoo shops. He was directly involved in the underground punk scene of the seventies and was just as influential in East L.A. during the black and grey movement of the eighties. He remains a pivotal figure in the current mainstream tattoo culture of Los Angeles, but embraces his rough underworld roots.
The Shamrock Social Club, located in the center of Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard, is home to some of L.A.'s best black and grey artists. Stay tuned for another post highlighting some of the other artists working out of the shop. Mahoney bleeds style, in both his work and persona, and is one of the most sought after tattoo artists in the country. So if you're looking to get inked by him, make sure to set up appointment well in advance and, unless you're a homie, be ready to fork over a lump sum for an immaculate black and grey tattoo.
