For architects and designers alike inspiration can manifest itself at any given moment, and capturing those early ideas sometimes means putting your pen down on the nearest flat surface. It is no wonder that the napkin has become a staple of these elementary pieces of art.
The NewSchool and San Diego American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) celebrated this practice at their 4th Annual Napkin Sketch. At this event, renowned architects donated napkin sketches for a live auction. The proceeds went towards funding scholarships and programs for architecture students. However, the students themselves were also directly involved in inviting recognized architects from around the globe. They produced sketches of the architects' projects directly on the invitations to entice and show that they too spent some time personalizing each envelope.
The event was a success and raised more than $7,600. The auction included sketches from the likes of Thom Mayne, Cesar Pelli, Robert Venturi, Massimiliano Fuksa and Peter Kulper among many others. To see the rest of the drawings click here.
