Kim Gordon recently published her memoir "Girl in a Band". If you don't already know, the 'band' she is referring to is Sonic Youth, where she played bass alongside guitarists, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, as well as drummer Steve Shelley. She was married to Moore for 27 years, a relationship that inevitably has a large impact on the book.
She kicks off her memoir at a show in Sao Paulo, where the band played their final gig together. She describes the wave of emotions that plagued that last show as her and Moore's marriage fell apart. This first chapter is even titled The End. Her intriguing organization of information takes us back to her childhood next.
The chapters are short, making the book reminiscent of a rock album full of short songs. It is largely introspective and doesn't waste ink with long recreated dialogue and we spend most of the time in Gordon's head figuring out the world through her perspective. Weather you're relaxing on the beach or commuting to work to do the opposite, this is definitely a good summer read.
